Throwing a change is good. It does the mind, body, and soul good to change up your routine once in a while and get some exercise in a different way or place.

The same can be said for students. If we occasionally give them a different physical activity to do or find a way to get them outside, especially in the winter for those who live in snow country, can be extremely beneficial.

Sharing ideas like this can be very valuable as well. There is a web site (http://www.physical-education-institute.com/physical_education_articles.html) that gives you a chance to create your own web page on their site. It appears to be a new site because there aren't many postings yet, but it sure is a great idea.

I love the idea of a podcast!!!! Cool way to let parents know what is going on in class. Not to mention that there is no better way to test for mastery of something than to have the kids teach it! I have used this in a low tech way before.....don't know why I didn't think of podcast.

An inexpensive tool to use in your classroom is a FlipCam. Put the students in groups (partners) and assign them something to act out, such as the correct basketball form, the correct situp, etc. Have one student film the others. Then, take the video file and use a video converter (like jodix.com) to create your very own podcast. Then, the students can view each others podcast. Just a thought....

There is a Presidential Fitness website where you can list your goals and enter your achievements---entire families and communities can get involved and cheer each other on. That is the only thing I can think of that uses technology...that is a tough one. Have you seen that website?

Check with Nike....see if they have a Grant or program out there to purchase, lease, or rent Nike+ units and Ipods for PE classrooms. Be a great way for students to really know how far they are running. Check with Nintendo as well for Wii grants. Or even Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, etc.

If it is really something you are wanting to emphasize, getting grants will probably be the most sufficient way to accomplish this goal...
or work small and collect Wii's over time using what funds you might have....maybe write a mini grant within your dsitrict how it will help and engage your students. It will probably require some leg work, but seems like a worthwhile project in the end.

Have your students create their own game or activity for PE and then develop webpages, videos, Digital Story Telling, etc. about their game...not directly relating, but indirectly a way to log and maintain student ideas and creations using technology.

It is a shame that with all the reports of increasing obesity and other health issues facing our population ( including kids ) that P.E. programs are the first to go when budgets get hit.

Maybe if we tested kids health knowledge on the standardized testing and required every kid to take and pass a national physical test ( like the presidential fitness ) we could show some black and white numbers to parents!!!!

P.E. was one of the reasons why I was able to stay attentive in school. I needed that daily release of energy to be able to go back into the classroom and sit listening to the teacher. I find it unbelievable that schools are phasing out PE classes in the name of money.

I was in love with my PE teacher as a child. He made me think I could actually do a pull-up one day. I even grew up to marry a PE teacher and have come to realize what a hard job it is...along with coaching. I like seeing kids have better sportsmanship than their parents. That's what makes me feel like the general population will get smarter and healthier if we don't cut these programs!

Well, going to the administrator was actaully part of the problem. My school recently acquired a brand new principal who stated from the start that..."I know nothing about sports nor do I like them." This year was the first year that we actually put in an academic and behavior contract for all athletes at the middle school level, which we had never had before. Even though, we as coaches, would try to enforce the contract as it should be the parents would go straight to the administrator and she would back the parents and not the coaches no matter what was stated in the athletic contract, which by the way, was signed by all the athletes and parents before the season began.

The reason I decided to resign was that I felt as if I had no power as the head coach. How can I have control over my team and discipline a kid on the field one day and the next day have it overturned by the principal when the parents come up to the school and complain? It's just so frustrating to know that I am doing the right thing in getting them prepared for the high school level and following the contract that we ALL agreed upon in the beginning of the year just to have it overturned like it just doesn't matter!

I'm not saying that I have finished my coaching career for good. This is my 9th year as a coach and I have never had to experience something like this. I believe that I will coach again in the future but not at my present school.

How sad to hear that you feel like you have to resign your position! You sound like a coach who was definitely on the right track in trying to teach responsibility and consequences to the kids. Instead of resigning, try going to the administration and asking for written rules pertaining to eligibility. Grades as well as behavior ( on and off the field ).

A coach should always have final say so about a student and their participation.

Too bad the parents in this case chose to teach the kids that winning is the most important thing. I hope those kids will learn that even the best athletes need to follow the rules as well before the lesson becomes much more painful! Like not playing in High School!

Team sports can teach so many life lessons, but only if parents back up the coach. Please don't take away a good coach from all the kids who DO learn those lessons by being involved with adults who care.......hang in there!

"Winning is the Only Thing" is definitely the mindset of most, if not all, of the parents at my school. I just recently finished up with my season as a middle school football coach and it was the most difficult year I have ever had throughout my past nine years of coaching. We, as coaches, were trying to build character and a positive work ethic in our football players. Some of our players had problems with discipline and responsibility for their actions in the classroom and on the field. We tried to hold them accountible when they did things that they were not supposed to do but the parents did not agree with us. Instead of the parents agreeing with the benching of their child, they would rather them play at all cost so we could win. Believe me, I am all for winnning but what's really important here? Is it winning every middle school football game or is it holding our kids accountible for their actions more important? Needless to say, it was so bad this year that it has led to my resignation.

I think our society is definitely going in a direction of "Winning is the Only Thing." We as parents and coaches are putting too much emphasis on winning at to early of an age. I am a high school coach and an ultimate competitor but I don't agree with the direction we are going for our children. I believe that kids should be kids. We should teach them to always give their best no matter what and the most important thing is to have fun. When these children become older I believe we can then put more emphasis on winning but once again the focus should always be "always give your best." Besides, I agree with you and your idea of life lessons are learned through competing. Win or loose.

I think you are right that kids are like most adults when it comes to physical activity. I find that it is hard to get teenage kids to participate in some really fun activities if they have not had a good experience with physical activity before in life. This is why I believe that Elementary physical education teachers have an extremely important job in making physical education activities a fun experience for all children. It takes a lot of encouragement sometimes for those children who have not had a positive experience with physical activity to take that leap outside their comfort zones. But that is our job! Make it a great time!
